A team of scientists and engineers appointed by the United Nations is developing a program capable of detecting and inform the world of the danger of a comet or asteroid potentially fatal.

According to the newspaper 'El País ', the idea of the announcement of the possible end of the world system arose in 2008 when, for the first time in history, the astronomers were able to detect a space object before it entered the atmosphere and will impact against the Earth.

For 20 hours astronomers the center of minor planets (MPC, by its acronym in English) together with experts and enthusiasts from around the world were watching the TC3 asteroid headed for the territory of Sudan as a missile. However, the scientists did not have permission to report the threat, since they did not have a protocol for these types of cases. They simply didn't know how to announce it to the world. Advises RT

Fortunately the only meteorite was the size of a car and left no injuries or significant damage.

However, the increase in cases of detection of space objects away disturbing our planet over the last years has made astronomers return seriously the question of putting up a protocol.

Thus, in January this year during the appointment, which had brought together all the institutions which are responsible for detecting and observing comets, asteroids, and other threats, the UN ordered to create the international asteroid alert network (IAWN, for its acronym in English). The new system is intended to coordinate work of threatening object-tracking so that humanity has a single source to refer to any danger.
